Fellowships at the Center for Global Health
Our CGH/Pfizer Initiative in International Health Fellow Program builds on over 30 years of pioneering international training and research, and on our model of sustained international collaboration that has resulted in international trainees returning to become leaders in developing research centers and public health programs in their home countries. Our focus is on major endemic diseases in which we share expertise and active involvement. This program also further strengthens UVa's own research and teaching program in the understanding, detection, and management of these important diseases in the United States and abroad.
As part of the broader University of Virginia initiative to internationalize the university, CGH maintains commitment and support for these international faculty and researchers from other nations as a means of bringing international perspectives to the university's intellectual and practical life. Through exchange with international colleagues, CGH also fosters partnerships for research and service in international settings, specifically in underserved countries, to strengthen capacity and address local priorities.
Our model of sustained international training and collaboration has resulted in 100% of our fellows returning home after training. Their continued research alliances with UVa faculty result in shared discoveries, patents, grants, and publications. All too often international training results in opportunities for overseas physicians and scientists to move permanently to the US (the "brain drain"). Our strongly articulated philosophy and documented track record is precisely the opposite: to attract the brightest and most innovative researchers who are strongly committed to returning home after their training because the opportunities for further progress on their global infectious disease research priorities are greatest in their home countries.
