Global Issues in Health and Illness

This course focuses on factors relating to global health and illness from a macroscopic perspective and is intended to provide students with an appreciation for the multidimensionality of health problems and potential solutions. Determinants of world health will be examined with focus on the relationship between environment, demographic and socioeconomic factors, and the distribution of diseases. The role of culture and health beliefs on health behavior will be examined. Socioeconomic factors that determine resources and barriers for health promotion and disease prevention within comparative health systems will be explored, with attention to health disparities around the world.

Students will be expected to work in small groups to design a plausible plan to address a selected international health problem. Selected students may choose to seek resources to enable implementation of the proposed intervention.

The course will include lectures from visiting international scholars at the School of Nursing (and other international scholars at UVA may be invited). These collaborative relationships will provide focus and examples for comparative analysis of global health problems.
