Physician-Scientist Training Program in Cardiovascular Research
The Physician-Scientist Training Program (PSTP) in Cardiovascular Disease at the University of Virginia is dedicated to training Physician-Scientists with keen clinical insight, strong physiological and pathophysiological understanding, and state-of-the-art cellular, molecular, genetic, and genomic technology expertise. Research Fellowship positions are available in multiple laboratories and sub-disciplines. Please visit the PSTP website for further information.
The Cardiovascular Research Center
The Center is an evolving organization based on the voluntary scientific interactions of investigative faculty with a broad interest in research in diseases of the cardiovascular system. It is a lightening rod, attracting ongoing research in cardiovascular function, as well as stimulating new initiatives. The Center is designed to be able to respond quickly to exciting new research opportunities, by providing financial and administrative assistance. Such assistance offers innovative investigators the possibility to adapt rapidly to new directions in their research programs, a capability that becomes ever more important as the pace of technology places greater importance on rapid reaction to scientific opportunity. The Center is also dedicated to working with the faculty in making the University a center of state-of-the-art technological excellence. The Vascular Biology Training Program provides the financial support and mentorship necessary to the successful training of young investigators interested in the study of cardiovascular function and pathology.
Cardiovascular Research within the CV Disease Fellowship:
Fellows can choose to spend block periods of time undertaking basic or large animal research projects. Both acute and chronic canine are employed with an emphasis in the areas of coronary physiology, electrophysiology, experimental echocardiography, and experimental myocardial ischemia and infarction. There is also a cell culture facility dedicated to growing of fetal and adult myocytes. Molecular and cellular cardiovascular research laboratories exist in the Cardiology Division and in basic science departments. Fellows can devote from one to two years to research training in addition to acquiring the clinical skills required for Board eligibility.
