Experienced Breast SurgeonsOur board-certified surgeons have specialty training in breast surgery and are committed to providing the latest and most proven prevention, diagnostic, treatment and reconstruction options, including: Lumpectomy:A lumpectomy is the removal of the breast cancer and a portion of normal tissue around the breast cancer lump (the areas removed during the surgery are shaded in green). The surgeon may also remove some of the lymph nodes under the arm to determine if the cancer has spread. Mastectomy:There are three types of mastectomy. Your physician can explain the benefits and risks of each type: total (or simple) mastectomy; modified radical mastectomy; or radical mastectomy. Immediate or Delayed Breast Reconstruction:In general, all women undergoing a mastectomy are candidates for immediate or delayed breast reconstruction. The patient is usually educated and counseled in breast reconstructive possibilities prior to mastectomy, so that she can make the decision for or against reconstruction before going into surgery. Sentinel Node Biopsy:During breast surgery with the use of a radioactive dye, the surgeon identifies the central node in the axillary (underarm) area of the affected breast side. This helps to determine the extent of early spread of the disease. This procedure is part of UVa's breast surgery protocol. Check out UVaHealth.com for more info on Breast Cancer Surgery |
