Radiation Oncology

UVa's board-certified radiation oncologists

are the first in the area to offer brachytherapy to women who have had lumpectomies. This innovative procedure - the implantation of radioactive seeds through a balloon catheter spares healthy tissue while eliminating cancer cells that may linger undetected after surgery.

The possible advantages of brachytherapy are: treatment time of 1 week as opposed to 6 weeks; reduction in the irritation of healthy breast tissues with fewer episodes of skin reactions; for patients who must undergo chemotherapy there is no delay in treatment when brachytherapy is utilized.
