At UVa, the breast pathologist plays a major role

in the multidisciplinary team approach to diagnosis and treatment. Breast tissue is analyzed and the pathology report generates information to the physician such as size of tumor, if there is metastasis, as well as the tumor markers, i.e. Estrogen, Progesterone and HER-2 receptors. The detailed information that results from the pathology examination of breast tissue guides medical management of patients to ensure the best outcomes.
