All breast images are interpreted by board-certified radiologists who specialize in breast imaging and utilize the most advanced mammography, ultrasound and MRI technology, Image-guided biopsies and procedures are performed at the Breast Care Center for diagnosis of problems and concerns. Mammogram:A mammogram is a highly sensitive x-ray of the breast using very low levels of radiation. The purpose of a mammogram is to detect breast cancer at its earliest stages, before it can be felt or cause symptoms. A mammogram may also be done to check a lump or a change in your breast. MRI:Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the breast is performed at UVa with the CP Breast Array Coil, which allows for bilateral MRI imaging and significantly improved differentiation between various breast tissue. MRI is very useful in the following scenarios: patients with implants, to determine status of the unaffected breast, and to determine the breast cancer staging. Researchers are presently investigating the advantages of MRI in screening younger women under 40 years of age who are BRCA1 or BRCA2 carriers. Ultrasound Imaging:UVa utilizes the state-of-the-art Phillips iu22 ultrasound unit to assist the breast radiologist in diagnosing benign or malignant lesions. Ultrasound is also utilized in performing breast biopsies when the lesion is seen more clearly with ultrasound as opposed to mammography. Stereotactic Biopsy:This biopsy technique is used in the UVa Breast Care Center to sample abnormal tissue that has been identified by mammography.
