Screening

UVa offers convenient screening mammography

at the outpatient facility Northridge. Through its mobile mammography program, UVa provides high quality mammograms at workplaces and community settings throughout the state. For patients with immediate problems or concerns, diagnostic imaging and procedures are performed at the Breast Care Center.

The Every Woman's Life Program provides free screening to women who qualify (based on income and age).  For more information, contact Shannon Grady at 434-243-9782 or sag2j@virginia.edu.

In order to maintain breast health, UVa recommends that women to adopt as lifelong habits the following:

  • One baseline mammogram between the ages of 35 and 39
  • Routine mammograms every year from the age of 40
  • Monthly Breast Self Examinations beginning at age 20
  • Regular Clinical Breast Examinations by a physician:
    • every three years between the ages of 20 and 40
    • every year after the age of 40
