Risk Assessment

UVa offers consultations and management

for women who are at high risk for developing breast cancer. Our breast specialist will provide recommendations, advanced screening technology, and treatment options.

Genetics Assessment:

UVa also provides the latest genetic assessment for women with strong personal and family histories that may suggest a link to breast cancer. Knowledgeable counselors help women face complex choices about genetic testing and effective prevention strategies. Fill out a genetics history questionnaire for Breast Cancer.

Ductal lavage:

UVa Breast Program offers this innovative method of evaluating breast cancer risk. The cells lining the mild ducts are analyzed by pathology to determine if there are abnormal cells with malignant qualities present. If cells are present, preventative measures are suggested, such as:

  • Very close monitoring with mammography, clinical breast exams and breast self-exam
  • Taking a drug, tamoxifen, which is an anti-estrogen (has been proven to reduce risk)
  • Consideration of prophylactic mastectomy
