Before losing her own battle against pancreatic cancer in October 2001, Virginia State Senator Emily Couric invited the University of Virginia community to envision a very special medical facility - a cancer center dedicated to meeting the individual needs of each patient and to treating the whole person, not just the disease.

As part of efforts to raise the overall quality of healthcare in America, Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) has expanded its Blue Distinction® designation, and named UVA Cancer Center as one of the 80-plus Blue Distinction Centers for Complex and Rare Cancers.

Friday night was a special night at the UVA women's basketball game. Both UVA coach Debbie Ryan and N.C. State coach Kay Yow have survived cancer. That's why UVA Health System chose that game as the first general public presentation of the drawings for the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center.

The Women's Basketball Coaches Association has started a Think Pink initiative focused on breast cancer awareness. At the UVA Women's Basketball Game against N.C. State (February 1, 2008) UVA Coach Debbie Ryan will recognize Coach Yow and the Kay Yow WBCA Cancer Fund.
