| The University of Virginia Health System is pleased to announce the appointment of Geoffrey R. Weiss, M.D., as Chief of the Division of Hematology-Oncology, and Deputy Director of the NCI-Designated Cancer Center . He comes to Virginia after serving as Chief of Medical Oncology and Deputy Chairman of Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio , and as Associate Director for Clinical Research at the San Antonio Cancer Institute. |

Dr. Weiss’ recent research has focused on early phase clinical trials of novel cancer therapies for solid tumors, with a particular emphasis on the use of cytokines. “Geoff’s research complements the exceptional on-going cancer research programs at the University of Virginia including those for cancer vaccines, immunology, molecular target identification, and drug discovery” says Michael Weber, Director of the University of Virginia Cancer Center. “This appointment enables us to expand the clinical research enterprise in a way that links it tightly to the robust programs in basic cancer research.”
Dr. Weiss will be joining a team of more than 40 clinical oncologists and over 150 laboratory investigators, and will help lead a major expansion of programs in both clinical cancer care and research at the University of Virginia . In support of these efforts, the University will soon open a new research building, construct an ambulatory clinical cancer care building, and substantially increase the number of oncology faculty.
In addition to his significant research and administrative experience, Dr. Weiss has also contributed to clinical care and medical education. He is listed in “Best Doctors in America ” and has developed computer-based interactive learning materials for medical students. His academic credentials include an A.B. degree from Middlebury College , an M. D. from St. Louis University and a residency in internal medicine at Temple University Hospital , Philadelphia . He did his Clinical Oncology Fellowship at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School in Boston and in1982 joined the faculty at the University of Texas , San Antonio .
