UVa Health System, Department of Radiation Oncology, seeks Women and Men, age 18 and older with brain cancer, who will be receiving radiation therapy as treatment for their disease, for research study.
Recently, the experimental drug Memantine has proven to be effective in the treatment of vascular dementia. Other studies have compared the memory and thinking of patients with vascular dementia and the memory and thinking of patients who have had whole-brain radiation treatment. Even though Memantine has been shown to improve memory and thinking in patients with Alzheimer's type and vascular dementia, this will be the first trial evaluating the drug's benefits for patients treated with whole-brain radiation.
The purpose of the study is to compare the effects, good and/or bad, of memantine with that of a placebo on memory and thinking in participants receiving whole brain radiotherapy. Study involves taking an experimental medicine or a placebo. All study-specific activities (written tests and quality of life questionnaires) will take approximately 20-30 minutes and will be conducted on an outpatient basis during routine treatment visits. No additional visits, procedures or tests are required for this study.
§ Study-related experimental medication and placebo will be provided free of charge.
§ No compensation is provided for this study.
