Goodwin Request for Proposal 2008

CLINICAL AND TRANSLATIONAL CANCER RESEARCH

Dear Cancer Investigators,

The Commonwealth Foundation for Cancer Research (CFCR) founded by Alice and Bill Goodwin, awarded the Cancer Center an 8-year grant to support development of new early phase cancer clinical trials and pre-clinical translational research projects. Since 2002, this money has been used to fund innovative investigator initiated clinical trials and pre-clinical pilot projects.  A pre-clinical project is a cancer study that is oriented toward obtaining data necessary to prepare a clinical trial, as opposed to a mechanistic research project.

Investigators interested in competing for CFCR support should submit a brief application by following this format:

A.  Working Title of Trial/Pre-clinical Translational Project.

B.  Abstract (250 words), Background, Significance and Method.  (No more than 5 pages total).

C.  A time line for when you hope realistically to open the new trial or begin the pre-clinical project, the expected rate of patient or specimen accrual, and the estimated duration of the trial.  We will use this for helping to plan financial support for projects.

D.  Matching Funds. The CFCR and the Cancer Center encourage investigators to pursue matching funds.  If you anticipate some external financial support (industry, foundation or NIH) please provide some details on what level of support you expect to receive or any pending applications.

E.  Budget.  Provide a detailed budget and budget justification, using NIH 398 budget.  Allowable costs include: salary of CRAs, trials-related expenses for the patient, routine supplies.  Travel, laptops and salary of the P.I. will not be supported.

F.  Please attach an NCI biosketch for the principal investigator.

The CFCR support has been critical to the success of our investigator initiated clinical research program.

Please submit your application for a clinical trial or "pre-clinical" projects, to Tom O'Leary (tjo@virginia.edu) by December 1, 2008.  The applications will be reviewed by members of the Cancer Center selected for expertise in the area of investigation.  Awards will be announced 4 weeks after receipt of the application.  This is the first round of funding for FY2009, but the CC will also review applications throughout the year and support additional trials if the funds exist.

Thank you,
Michael J. Weber, Ph.D., Cancer Center Director
Geoffrey R. Weiss, M.D., Cancer Center Medical  Director
