PILOT RESEARCH PROJECTS and INFRASTRUCTURE

Deadline September 1, 2005

The Cancer Center will provide initial support for investigations and technology development that can lead to major external funding. Support typically is in the range of $25-50,000 for one year, renewable for a second year, based on a review of progress. Higher funding levels would be appropriate for multi-investigator proposals or for instrumentation or infrastructure. You must be a current member of the Cancer Center to be eligible for these funds, and members of any rank are eligible to apply.

We are especially interested in funding projects that foster inter-disciplinary collaborations, multi-investigator publications and new grant applications. We particularly encourage interactions between laboratory scientists and clinical investigators.  This could include research on Cancer Biomarkers, Tumor Imaging, Drug Discovery and Development, Molecular Assessment of Clinical Trials, Animal Models of Cancer, Women’s Oncology, Prostate Cancer, Heme Malignancies, etc.  It also could include the development of new Core facilities, the expansion of existing Cores, or development of new technology. We also will support innovative basic research ideas, but the cancer focus must be clear and explicit.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to consult with the CCSG leadership (Michael Weber, Sally Parsons, Geoff Weiss), Associate Director for Infrastructure (Jay Fox), and Program Leaders: David Brautigan, John Bushweller, Vic Engelhard, Joyce Hamlin, Tom Parsons, and Peggy Shupnik.  A Letter of Intent addressed to Tom O’Leary, Box 334 is optional, but, can help us provide a potential applicant with guidance on preparing a competitive application.

Application narratives should be no more than five pages in length. In addition, USING NIH 398 FORMS, please submit a budget, budget justification, biosketch, and the complete Other Support information.

Applications are due to Tom O’Leary by September 1, 2005.

FARROW FELLOWSHIPS:

TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP

 Deadline: September 1, 2005

The Farrow Family donation to the Medical Alumni Foundation and to the Cancer Center allowed the creation of an endowed account to support fellowships in translational cancer research. Preference will be given to an MD or MD-PhD in a residency or fellowship position or to a PhD post-doctoral fellow working on an explicitly translational project.  We are especially interested in enhancing our ability to perform molecular analysis on patient samples. Preference will also be given where matching funds are available from the mentor or academic department.   We have up to $50,000 to support one or two fellows depending upon the matching support.

Applications should include:

a 2-4 page letter from the candidate that includes their background and what they will study during the year.  The letter should be signed by the candidate and the lead mentor(s).  The letter should also describe any matching funds.

  • the candidate’s C.V. or biographical sketch
  • the mentor’s biographical sketch and Other Support
  • a budget request and justification

Applications are due to Tom O’Leary by September 1, 2005.
