TheAmerican Cancer Society has awarded the University of Virginia Cancer Center an Institutional Research Award. The major objective of the Institutional Research Award is to encourage young cancer investigators by providing “seed grants” within the Institution. The Society also wishes to encourage programs in psychosocial and behavioral research, and cancer care in the economically disadvantaged. The American Cancer Society’s policies and guidelines governing Institutional Research Awards are as follows: Grants will be awarded to young investigators who have not received support from prior ACS Institutional Research Grants or currently (as of December 2004) receive funding from National granting agencies. Eligibility is limited to individuals with faculty appointments. Established investigators (e.g., Associate or Full Professors), residents, post docs and graduate students are NOT eligible. Awards will be made up to a maximum of $20,000. We expect to fund between 4 and 7 projects. Individual allocations can be used for equipment, consumable supplies and limited technical support. (the ACS discourages the use of Institutional Grant Funds for the support of full-time technical help.) In the past, these awards have been a most valuable resource for cancer investigators at the University. Click Here for an electronic copy of the application for these grants.
