CancerHelp:Cancer Info at Your Fingertips |
CancerHelp is one of many educational resources that we provide for our patients and their loved ones.A touch screen computer terminal located in our Cancer Center Clinic, it is very easy to use, even for someone who isn't very computer savvy. When someone is diagnosed with cancer, one of the most important things we can do for them is to provide the knowledge they'll need to make decisions along this difficult journey. CancerHelp was started by the late Kathryn "Kit" Keefe, a breast cancer patient who was frustrated by the overwhelming task of keeping current with her ever-changing cancer information needs. She knew that she could make better decisions about her treatments and supports if she had complete and current information. To make her dream a reality, she got funding and started the CancerHelp Institution in 1991. By consulting with the National Cancer Institute to identify cancer information sources, Keefe created a system that could be continually expanded, accessible and easy-to-use to help patients with their treatment decisions and emotional needs. Her vision is now a reality at medical centers nationwide. CancerHelp stations are now running at other top cancer centers, including the M.D.Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas and the Mayo Clinic. CancerHelp joins other free educational resources at UVa's Cancer Center. These include The Learning Place, a library equipped with an Internet-accessibly computer, and many other types of patient education materials and videos, and the Learning Curve, a curved wall filled with brochures on various topics related to cancer. |
