Each call costs the Blue Ridge Poison Center $42 in operating expenses.
But our services are offered at no charge to our clients.

In 2008, The Blue Ridge Poison Center:

  • Answered 35,097 toll-free calls about poison exposures or poison safety.
  • Made 26,543 follow up calls to check on callers who had poison exposures.
  • Distributed more than 587,000 flyers, magnets, and other prevention materials to businesses, schools, pharmacies, and individuals.
  • Performed 144 programs to teach the general public about poison safety, reaching 14,863 Virginians.

Plus, 71% of our callers find that they can safely treat their poison exposure at home after receiving advice and guidance from our experts. It is estimated that in 2006, this saved Virginians more than $6 million in unnecessary trips to an emergency room. Family
