Each call costs the Blue Ridge Poison Center $42 in operating expenses.
But our services are offered at no charge to our clients.
In 2006, The Blue Ridge Poison Center:

Answered 35,317 toll-free calls about poison exposures or poison safety.

Made 27,016 follow up calls to check on callers who had poison exposures.

Distributed more than 1.1 million flyers, magnets, and other prevention materials to businesses, schools, pharmacies, and individuals.

Performed 197 programs to teach the general public about poison safety, reaching 32,612 Virginians.
Plus, 67% of our callers find that they can safely treat their poison exposure at home after receiving advice and guidance from our experts. It is estimated that in 2006, this saved Virginians more than $5 million in unnecessary trips to an emergency room.
