Counties in white represent BRPC service area

The Blue Ridge Poison Center (BRPC) serves 62 counties in Central and Western Virginia as well as Virginia Beach. The BRPC receives over 35,000 calls per year for information and advice. Offering the highest quality service 24 hours-a-day, the BRPC was awarded recertification as a Regional Poison Center by the American Association of Poison Control Centers in 2005. Only 61 centers nationally have met the requirements for this designation.

Behind the statistics are the people in need of the services offered by the BRPC including parents, families, caretakers, industry and health care professionals. Forty-nine percent of our calls concern children exposed to a potential poison. A majority of the time we can reassure the caller and provide for safe observation at home. When necessary, the poison center can give immediate management advice to a care giver in the home and activate the emergency medical services system to bring the victim to the hospital. The BRPC also provides advice and consultation to health care providers charged with the care of a poisoning emergency. Our medical directors, physicians with specialty training in the field of medical toxicology, are available 24 hours-a-day to provide physician to physician advice.
