Getting a Second Opinion

Second Opinions/Referrals

It is common for patients and families to seek a second opinion during the course of a serious illness. You should not worry that you might make your current physician angry by seeking the advice of another physician—second opinions are considered standard medical practice. If you are not being treated by a neuro-oncologist, ask the physician currently treating you or your family physician to suggest a physician who specializes in brain tumors.

When travel is not convenient or necessary, we offer both written consultations and pathology reviews of brain tumor tissue previously removed for biopsy without a face-to-face appointment.

Written Consultations

A medical and surgical neuro-oncologist will review each case. You may additionally request our neuropathologists to review the tumor tissue from your biopsy or surgery.

If you are requesting written consultation from the UVa Neuro-Oncology Center, we would ask that you forward the following:

  • copies of all MRI and CT scans, separated by dates with dates clearly marked (available through your hospital's Radiology Department)
  • copies of all medical records, including lab tests and pathology reports (generally available through either your hospital's Medical Records Department and/or your physician's office)
  • a note describing your current symptoms and specific questions you would like answered
  • a check for $150 payable to the Neuro-Oncology Center, UVa Medical Center

Be sure to include your phone number and mailing address. If you prefer to have your consultation faxed rather than mailed to you, please let us know and include a fax number.

NOTE: Although your hospital and/or doctors may charge a fee for copies of your scans and records, do not send originals. Your medical records will not be returned, but we can return your scans upon request.

Send all materials, along with payment, to:
