Ph.D. Mentorship Requirements

I. In order to act as Ph.D. Mentor, members of the Interdisciplinary Program in Biophysics must belong to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) Faculty or to the Graduate Faculty of the School of Engineering.

II. Faculty who are not GSAS Faculty or the Graduate Faculty of the School of Engineering can, however, be members of the Biophysics Program. Persons in this category will most likely have tenure or tenure track appointments in a Clinical Department in the School of Medicine, or term/temporary appointments as Research or Visiting Faculty.

III. For those Faculty who have tenure or tenure track appointments, membership in the GSAS Faculty for them can be requested by the Executive Committee of the Biophysics Program through petition to the GSAS Dean and Graduate Committee. In order to make this petition, the Executive Committee must be convinced that the faculty member, together with his/her research program and laboratory, meets the standards for Ph.D. degree mentorship in Biophysics.

IV. Faculty on term/temporary appointment (usually one-three years) are not eligible to act as mentors for Ph.D. thesis research in Biophysics because of the limited time of their appointments. It may, however, in some cases be possible to have a member of the GSAS Faculty act as a co-mentor for thesis work, an arrangement that must be approved by the Executive Committee.
