Biomolecular Research Facility services

DNA Sciences

Mass Spectrometry services

  • Protein identification from gel or solution by either peptide mass fingerprinting or ESI-LC/MS/MS at the low femtomole level.
  • identification of proteins in complex mixtures such as tissue and media
  • quantification of relative amounts of specific proteins in tissue samples by isotopic or iTRAQ labeling, or label free analysis
  • Identification of post-translational modifications (deamination, glycosylation, etc)
  • Identification of phosphorylation sites using titanium dioxide enrichment
  • De Novo sequence analysis of novel proteins to obtain sequence data for cloning
  • High resolution, high mass accuracy measurements of whole peptides and small proteins
  • Confirmation of peptide and protein identity by routine MALDI mass spectrometry
  • Identification of binding partners

Shared instrumentation and chromatography services

  • Chromatography by HPLC of proteins and peptides and other molecules
  • Gel scanning for visible and fluorescent stains
  • Fluorescent plate reader (user operated) for reading fluorescent reagents in 96 well plates
  • Circular dichroism (user operated) for study of secondary structure of proteins.

DNA synthesis by Invitorgen and peptide synthesis by Anaspec are now available through Molmart

Services are billed at current rates through the Office of Research Core Administration to  PTAO code (purchase order or credit card outside University of Virginia).
