Call for Submissions

Bioethics Matters, the Center newsletter is distributed throughout the United States. It serves as both an educational resource and communication vehicle. The newsletter is read by academics, clinicians, students, and others interested in keeping abreast with issues that confront the healthcare system and the problems its stakeholders confront.

Bioethics Matters concerns itself with two general themes. The first theme concerns the Center for Biomedical Ethics. It carries news about the Center and its staff and their activities as well as news about the Virginia Healthcare Ethics Network - a statewide network that the Center supports. The second theme is concerned with other issues. These issues are discussed in the Ethical Conundrums column and the Insert.

The Ethical Conundrums column is generally less formal than the Insert and it is certainly shorter. This column has presented cases that may be of interest to our readers, it has presented controversial opinions (often these opinions have been in sharp contrast to those many of our faculty share), it has carried news that may be of interest and it has served as a vehicle for speculative thoughts about the development of the healthcare system.

We have no pretenses about the newsletter - it is not an academic journal. Therefore, authors have used the Insert in the same general way as the Conundrums column. Nevertheless, we require authors writing for the Insert to be generally more thorough in their research and more complete in the presentation of any opinions they care to share - be it a book review, an opinion, or an analysis of some issue of interest to our readers.

Authors for Bioethics Matters have generally been drawn from faculty and staff of the University of Virginia and others in Virginia with whom the Center is affiliated. But the Center has grown over the past three years. As a result, our readership has become more diverse. For this reason, we invite submission from students, academics, clinicians, and others interested in sharing ideas about the past, present, and future of the healthcare system and its impact on the way we think about ethics in our society and in healthcare. We invite book reviews, interesting cases, news of interest, speculative thoughts, and opinions. We are open to suggestions for these columns and invite you to contact Ann Mills, editor, Bioethics Matters, should you have information or an opinion you would like to share.

Space can vary, but articles for Ethical Conundrums are generally between 400-700 words. Material for the Insert cannot exceed 2000 words.
