Originally born and raised in The Netherlands, I came to Virginia in 1998. I am a recent graduate from the Bioethics Master’s Degree Program and have been working at the Center since April of 2001.

I have always been fascinated by ethical issues. As a fourth-year medical student, I taught medical ethics to first-year students, which raised my passion for the ethical debate. In 1996, I graduated from Utrecht University. My appointment at the Department of Ear-, Nose- and Throat surgery in Amsterdam taught me more about the ethical dilemmas in surgery and human subject research. Subsequently, my experience here in the US with both clinical trials and basic experimentation further fueled my interest in the ethics of biomedical research.

I have recently completed work on a project developing recommendations for infected physicians performing invasive procedures. Currently I am working  with Jonathan Moreno and a multi-disciplinary group of experts on developing ethical regulations for innovative or experimental surgery. My recent publications include articles on human subject research, maternal-fetal conflicts and innovative surgery. Other interests of mine include clinical ethics, animal experimentation and health policy. I greatly enjoy teaching in the Biomedical Ethics Master’s Program as well as in the Medical School. My long term goals include attaining a permanent position in an academic institution, teaching and researching the ever fascinating field of biomedical and clinical ethics.
