Professional Development

The primary emphasis of the MCDB Program is on original research and the development of the student as an independent investigator.

To that end, in addition to benchwork, students will be required to give a talk for each lab rotation and give presentations in journal club and various advanced courses in the first and second years. Depending on the progress of the dissertation project, students will give at least one poster presentation by the end of the third year at either a University event or professional meeting. By the end of the fourth year, most students have given a research in progress public talk at the University, and some have given talks at various regional or national meetings. Ultimately, each student is expected to publish as a first-author in peer-reviewed professional journals.

Through this academic and professional progression, each student is encouraged to seek advice as needed from the Program Director, MB Academic Committee members, rotation mentors, course directors, and/or his or her mentor or dissertation committee members.
