• Activities:
Research In Progress dinners/meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month. These are designed to give students the opportunity to discuss their research with other students. Speakers are also invited on occassion to discuss specific areas of research.
Department and student retreats are held once a year at a destination outside of UVA to discuss research and to enjoy fun activities such as hiking and camping.
The Graduate Biosciences Society is a student-run organization that hosts many social events for graduate students, such as river tubing, outings to local vineyards, annual retreats, and meetings on campus.
• Application:
We are very excited about our program, which gives students the ability to explore a broader range of research interests. The application process is described under “How to Apply” on the WWW page. Electronic applications are preferred.
The average GPA should be 3.2 or better on a 4.0 scale.
We do not require the GRE Subject test for admission.
We require a minimum of three recommendation letters for admission.

The GSAS application process can now be monitored online once the application has been submitted electronically. Applicants create a user name and password as part of the application process and can return to the GSAS website to check the status of the application and supplemental documents (i.e., recommendation letters). In addition, applicants will receive an e-mail from the BMBG Program Administrator confirming receipt of the application by the BMBG program.

Charlottesville has been voted the #1 place to live. We are centrally located in Virginia and are just a few hours away from many places of interest such as Washington D.C., Virginia Beach, and Historic Jamestown in Williamsburg.

• International Students: In recent years the competition for this support has been extremely keen and we have only offered financial support to applicants with a minimum score of 630 on the PBT (paper-based test) TOEFL, 250 on the CBT (computer-based test) TOEFL, and 90 on the IBT (internet-based test)TOEFL.
All students are required to take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) General Test and are encouraged to take a pertinent GRE Subject Test, but the GRE Subject Test is not required for admission. Our average GRE scores for international applicants have been greater than 80% Verbal, 90% Quantitative, and 90% Analytical.

• Seminars:
Departmental seminars are held weekly and invited speakers, who are in the top of their field, present talks on a vast array of scientific topics.
• Stipend/Wages/Tuition:
Financial assistance, in the form of full tuition and fees (currently $21,250/annum), student health insurance, plus a stipend (currently $24,000/annum) to cover living expenses, is offered to all applicants accepted into the program.
**Students who win competitive awards such as NSF predoctoral fellowships or Special UVA Merit Fellowships are eligible to receive up to a $2000 merit supplement to their stipend (for a maximum stipend of $26,000 in 2007-2008).
