All students receive a stipend, which increases yearly (starting 7/1/2009 the amount is $25,000*), full tuition, and health/dental insurance. A yearly allotment for travel to scientific meetings or courses is available depending on individual program policies. Financial support comes from University fellowships, National Institutes of Health (NIH) Training Grants, federal, foundation, and industry grants as well as from a Pratt Endowment Fund. *Students who win competitive awards such as NSF predoctoral fellowships or Special UVA Merit Fellowships are eligible to receive up to a $3,000 merit supplement to their stipend (for a maximum stipend of $28,000 in 2009-2010).
Implementation and continuation of financial support and/or merit supplements is contingent upon full time enrollment at the University of Virginia and satisfactory performance in both research and academic classes as judged by the student's PhD Mentor, Graduate Program, and Associate Dean.
Special note to international applicants:
Financial aid for students who are neither U.S. citizens nor U.S. permanent residents is very limited. Although approximately 19% of each entering class is international, on average, we are able to admit less than 5% of our non-U.S. applicant pool. Please take this into consideration before applying to the Program.
