Entering students, 2004

The following information is provided with this caveat:  Although strong weighting is given to a student’s grade point average (GPA) and Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores, the most important criterion for admission is a student’s passion and commitment for research and aspiration for a professional career conducting pioneering biomedical research .

This year's entering students had undergraduate degees in: biology, biochemistry, and genetics.  One student received an MS in Biotechnology before applying, and three others worked as research or lab technician/specialists after receiving their bachelor's degree and before applying to graduate school.  Many MolMed students worked in labs while attending college either as research assistants or summer interns.
Students with undergraduate GPA and GRE scores below the average have often:
  • successfully completed a masters program in a related field before entering the MolMed program.
  • worked in a lab as a technician to improve their knowledge, skills, and experience before applying to the MolMed program.
  • provided reprints of research they have coauthored to show interest and proficiency.

International Students:

Applicants for whom English is not their native language are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The minimum acceptable TOEFL score for admission by GSAS is 600 (paper-based test) or 250 (computer-based test).  If you have recently taken the British equivalent, called the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), this score may be substituted for the TOEFL with special permission.  The desired IELTS score is 7 or better.

Any international student who has studied in the U.S. for 2 or more years is not required to submit a TOEFL score.
