Atrial Fibrillation Physician Educational Program -- Ablation

A scholarship program underwritten by an educational grant from St. Jude Medical. Sponsored by the University of Virginia School of Medicine, Office of Continuing Medical Education.

Program description…

This one-day intensive observational experience at The Atrial Fibrillation Center is designed to educate electrophysiologists and cardiologists on ablation of atrial fibrillation. Electrophysiologists at the University of Virginia Health System will present lectures, perform an AF ablation, and discuss the procedure. Additionally, a clinical engineer from St. Jude Medical will present a lecture and hands-on demonstration of the use of advanced mapping systems.

This experience is presented as a scholarship program with expenses paid through an educational grant from St. Jude Medical for the applicants who are selected.

Learning objectives…

After participating in this educational program, you will be able to:

  • Describe the evolving ablation techniques for atrial fibrillation and their appropriateness for different patients.
  • Identify appropriate patients for AF ablation and selection criteria that may lead to higher success rates.
  • Discuss the practical aspects and economic considerations for the use of advanced mapping systems and imaging in your practice.
  • Explain the major components of an AF ablation procedure and pointers for success.
  • Describe how to use 3-D mapping and navigation and how to create a segmented 3-D cardiac chamber model from 2-D CT /MRI slice data.
  • Determine the feasibility of incorporating AF ablation into your practice.

Who should apply for scholarships…

  • Electrophysiologists:

Physicians who are interested in performing or expanding their application of AF ablation procedures and in enhancing skills and knowledge of AF ablation techniques. Also, those interested in refreshing their knowledge of transseptal access techniques.

  • Cardiologists:
Interested in enhancing knowledge of patients who would benefit from an AF ablation

Learning materials, hotel, and travel, will be fully paid through the scholarship program.
