Research Year

Medical students may elect to extend their medical education to include a year of basic science or clinical research without an additional year's tuition. The student will prepare a research proposal reflecting the hypothesis for the project, methods, and a time schedule which must be approved by the student's research supervisory committee.
To receive credit, the student will present the initial proposal and a final report in the format of a scientific paper. Recognition for the research year will appear on the student's transcript. Generalist Scholars Program

The University of Virginia offers an innovative program for students who are interested in pursuing a career in generalist medicine (family medicine, general pediatrics or general internal medicine) in a clinical and/or academic setting. The Generalist Scholars Program supplements the medical education of its students with special opportunities in the area of primary care. In addition, each student works with an individual faculty mentor during the four years of medical school and, with the assistance of the mentor, completes a thesis in an area relevant to generalist medicine. Some financial support is offered to students selected for this program. For further information, please contact: Director, Generalist Scholars Program, P.O. Combined Degree Programs

(MD/PhD)

This program offers a combined MD/PhD degree program for students interested in careers in academic medicine. The aim of the program is to provide students with the highest quality training in the basic sciences and a firm grounding in clinical medicine. Students in the program work over a period of 6-7 years to receive an M.D. and a Ph.D. degree. The curriculum is tailored to meet the goals of the individual student. The Ph.D. degree may be achieved in any of the School of Medicine basic science programs or in a number of affiliated science and engineering programs. The program is intended for students who are planning careers in academic medicine with a significant component of research. Graduates are expected to make significant contributions to the fields of medical science and to contribute substantially to the training of new physicians and scientists.
