Education Task Force
of the UVA School of Medicine

Overview of the Education Task Force (ETF):

The ETF was appointed by Interim Vice President and Dean Sharon L. Hostler, MD in the Fall of 2007. Bobby Chhabra, MD, and Melanie McCollum, PhD were appointed Co-Chairs of the ETF. Staff support for the ETF was provided by Troy Buer and Juliet Trail from the SOM Dean's Office.

The charge to the task force was delivered by Dean Hostler on October 1, 2007.

The charge of the Education Task Force was to assess the technological, personnel and support needs of the new medical education building and to provide Dean Hostler and the education deans with specific recommendations regarding the best utilization of space and technology. The task force was also asked to consider the means by which the new facilities, the Medical Education Research Institute (MERI) and the existing facilities can be used to transform medical education at UVa and enhance our reputation as a model clinical education program.

The FINAL REPORT OF THE EDUCATION TASK FORCE (pdf) was presented to Dean Hostler, Bradley E. Haws, MBA, Senior Associate Dean & COO and R.J. Canterbury, MD, Senior Associate Dean for Education along with invited guests on May 21, 2008.

Overview of Task Force Composition and Activities:

The ETF was composed of 43 members, who served on five ETF Subcommittees. Committee representation was broad and included medical students, residents, and faculty from the junior through senior levels. Liaisons between each subcommittee were appointed for maximum communication between groups.

The members of the ETF met monthly during the period October 2007 through April 2008. Subcommittees were charged to conduct monthly meetings as well, on their own schedule. In addition, a number of special sessions were held with guest speakers or special topics for discussion. For full information on membership and meeting schedule, click here.
