Membership in the Academy

Membership Details: The Academy of Distinguished Educators was founded by the Dean of the School of Medicine in 2003 to provide an organizational structure that would recognize, reward and promote excellence in education. Currently, the Academy has 140 members, one third of which are from basic science departments. New members are recognized at a ceremony hosted by the Dean each fall. Members are appointed for life. All faculty of the School of Medicine at the Assistant Professor level or higher are eligible for membership. Applications are solicited once a year in the Spring.

Membership is achieved by committee review of applications OR may be offered to recipients of institutional teaching awards without the need to apply to the Academy. Institutional teaching awards include the Dean's Award for Excellence in Teaching, the David C. Harrison Distinguished Educator Award, the Master Educator Award (for GME), and the Robert J. Kadner Award for Outstanding Graduate Teaching. For further information on these awards, visit the SOM Directory of Teaching Awards.

 1. Reflective statement:

This should be a short (less than one page) statement outlining your teaching philosophy with reference to your most significant contributions to teaching.

A useful example of the Reflective Statement is available on the web site of the Teaching Resource Center (TRC). View this essay by Craig Barton.

 2.Educator’s Portfolio:

Please use the Academy of Distinguished Educator’s Portfolio Template. Further guidelines and details are available on the ADE Teaching Portfolio page.

Membership requires demonstration of sustained excellence in areas of teaching, as outlined in Section II of the portfolio. Outcome measures should be submitted to support these areas of teaching with Section III (Appendix) of the portfolio.

 3. Supporting Letters (2):

Please submit two letters of support at least one of which must come from either the department chair or a supervising faculty member who is in a position to judge your teaching activity.  Additional supporting letters may be submitted with the appendix of the Portfolio.  Letters from learners / trainees are encouraged.

The entire packet should never exceed 50 pages, including approximately 10-20 pages for the Portfolio and the remainder supporting documentation (Appendices). No credit will be given for material in excess of this limit.   Except in the case of exceptional prior accomplishments, the committee will focus on activities over the past 5 years or during your time at UVA (whichever is shorter).   Those items discouraged from inclusion in the portfolio include Powerpoint slides, handouts, journal reprints, and copies of hand-written evaluations.

Four copies of each of the above (1. Reflective Statement, 2. Portfolio, 3. Supporting Letters) should be submitted on or before Thursday, May 1, 2008, at 4pm to: Dr. Sanfey's office, Barringer Room 5421 (tel 982-4411 for directions)
