The Academy Steering Committee is responsible for developing, coordinating, and overseeing the operations of the Academy Member Subcommittees.

Steering Committee's Mission:

  • Establish criteria for membership in the Academy
  • Review applications for new and continued membership.
  • Identify disintguished educators as Distinguished Life Members.
  • Administer funds for the Academy
  • Initiate fund-raising activity to support education.

Activities

Mission: To plan and organize Academy activities that promote interaction among educators at the UVa SOM. Organize visits from prominent educators at other medical schools.

Curriculum Liaison

Mission: To promote and facilitate the free exchange of ideas between the Academy and the Medical School Curriculum Committee.

Educator Development
Chair: William Wilson, MD

Mission: To improve the teaching skills and effectiveness of individual educators within the School of Medicine; to encourage mentoring of and by faculty regarding teaching activities; and to promote 'educator' as a valued career path for our faculty.

Education Research and Resources
Chairs: Robert Bloodgood, PhD, Larry Merkel, MD, PhD 

Mission1. To encourage an increase in educational research activities of the UVA School of Medicine faculty. 2. To provide funding for educational research activities that would have previously been unfunded. 3. To develop a reliable and valid method of reviewing educational research grant applications from the UVA School of Medicine faculty. 4. Ensure that educational research projects are compatible with the undergraduate medical curriculum.  5. Publicize the medical education research activities at the UVa School of Medicine. 6. Provide information on external sources of support for medical education research.

Activities: The principal current activities of this ADE sub-committee are two: 1) Running the annual ADE medical education research poster session and associated social event) and 2) Managing the annual ADE medical education research grants program.  Soon, we will be creating a web page that provides faculty with information about external sources of funding for medical education research.

Mission: To identify and establish measurable, acceptable criteria for membership of the Academy to include renewal of membership as well as first time application for regular and distinguished (lifetime) membership. Applications for each category will be reviewed annually. Information on gaining membership to the Academy is available on the Membership Page.

Resident as Teacher Committee
Chairs: Julia Iezzoni, MD, Linda Waggoner-Fountain, MD

Mission: To develop the role of the resdient as teacher and/or leader. The members of this committee will be appointed by the committee chair early in 2006.

Teacher Assessment
Chairs: Amy Bouton, PhD, Mark Mendelsohn, MD

Mission: The Subcommittee shall develop and implement techniques for the evaluation of the effectiveness of individual educators. These tools will be relevant to a number of settings: lecture hall, small group/tutorial, laboratory, ward, operating room, procedural area, clinic, and private practice (extramural).  Evaluation will include direct teaching, advising, and mentoring but not educational administration, curriculum development, or educational research. The output of such evaluations will affect: promotions and tenure, distribution of teaching funds, the conferring of teaching awards, and the design of developmental programs for faculty.
 

Additional committees will be developed as needed by the Academy.
