Assisting Students Achieve Medical Degrees |
|
The purpose of the ASAMD Project is to assist minorities and other students from disadvantaged backgrounds (i.e., rural, educationally, or economically disadvantaged non-minority students) to enter, remain in, and successfully graduate from medical school. High School Program The Summer High School Academic Reach-Up Program (SHARP) is a non-residential, four-week summer program for regional high school students, with special efforts being made to reach out to students in rural areas. Students interested in pursuing careers, especially those in medical or other health professions, for which undergraduate, and possibly graduate, college education is required are encouraged to attend. SHARP students take courses in laboratory science, computer skills, writing and reading comprehension, humanities, and interpersonal skills. Each year the humanities component centers around a theme, so that learning activities highlight the theme. The program also contains a mentorship component, provides special lectures from community leaders and student affairs professionals, and offers day trips to at least one other college or university campus and other areas of historical and cultural interest.
