The Student Academic Support Services have been very effective and the following are excerpts from three participants (they remain anonymous to ensure confidentiality):

  • I am writing this letter in regards to the Peer Resource Program [currently the Academic Mentorship Program]. As a former tutee and current tutor, I recommend the program for future medical students at the University of Virginia. From the student aspect, not only does the program allow a student to gain confidence, and get the academic load under control, but it also enables first and second year students to interact with upper classmen and have insight into the clinical aspects of medicine.

  • I want to thank you for your help during my first and second years of medical school. I used your office's tutoring services to get me through a difficult time during my first semester and to successfully prevent crisis in the following semesters. Your staff and all the tutors that helped me were excellent and responded to my varying needs. I am glad to say that I am returning the favor and am tutoring a first year student in Anatomy this year.

  • I write in order to express my appreciation for the tutoring program provided by your office. I took advantage of the tutoring service last year in two courses. One of the tutors in particular had a significant impact on my studies during the first year. He not only provided me with study tips and quality study time each week, but he also gave me a lot of support and encouragement. Medical school can be difficult the first year, and I found that the tutoring program helped me adjust and feel more confident in my studies.
