Message from the Dean The University of Virginia School of Medicine is in the midst of preparing for an accreditation visit in October 2006. The accreditation process can help us validate our education efforts and be a catalyst for institutional re-modeling and change. We have the opportunity to develop strategies to assure that the School's strengths are maintained and any weaknesses are addressed. Accreditation surveys happen only once every eight years. We will need to pause in our hectic professional lives to look closely at what we do as a School, and to ponder what we will strive toward. The accreditation survey will ensure that the School meets all prescribed standards for U.S. medical schools. More important, it seems to me, is the self-evaluation and improvement it promotes through a comprehensive self study. Even how we do it can be a model for others. To everyone who will be involved in this important institutional self study, I extend my deepest appreciation. Arthur Garson Jr., M.D., M.P.H.
