* Short Course Alternatives for Biostatistics & Epidemiology:

Fellows may be eligible to take their Biostatistics and Epidemiology courses through the GME office 'Certificate Program in Public Health and Clinical Research'.  This program offers two 2-week classes (twice a year July/January) earning 3.0 University credits which can be transferred/applied to any Master's Degree Program. Participation is subject to approval by your fellowship program director. For further information, please contact the Graduate Medical Education Office at 4-0401 or email them at GME Office.

Elective Courses:

Elective courses are chosen to meet the specific needs of individual MTPCI Trainees, with the guidance of their Mentoring Committee and in consultation with their Primary Research Mentor. Although there is no fixed requirement or limit on the number of elective courses, the typical MTPCI Trainee will complete two to four elective courses.  A major strength of the MTPCI is that the program, although sponsored by the School of Medicine and the GCRC, enjoys the enthusiastic support of the institution as well. As such, MTPCI Trainees may select from a wide range of courses taught in the various schools of the University of Virginia.

The following links are provided to aid in the selection of appropriate elective coursework.

If you know the type of course you want to pursue, use the convenient KEYWORD SEARCH tool to find all courses with a particular keyword in either the title or the course description. For example, you might use the keyword "bioethics" or "clinical trials". The search goes across all schools and the results are sorted by course number within each school. This handy tool for searching the entire University course catalog has very simple instructions and examples, and it is fast - unless you are on a modem.

Taking Courses for Credit vs. Interactive-Audit:

Trainees may take classes for credit or by interactive audit.  Interactive audit means attending all classes and participating actively in all class activities including assignments.  Completion of tests is at the discretion of the instructor.  Seats are limited for interactive-audit and should be arranged well in advance of the class to be sure space is available.

Classes may be taken for credit through the Community Scholar Program in the School of Continuing & Professional Studies.  Employees are eligible for a Tuition Waiver to take one class per semester.  Instructions and forms to apply for the Community Scholar Program and the employee Tuition Waiver can be downloaded at:

Related Lectures Available On-line:

Lectures from the "2nd Annual Intensive Workshop on Grant Writing, Preparation, and Submission in Rehabilitation Research", held Jan 31- Feb 4, 2004 at the Boar's Head Inn, Charlottesville, VA, were recorded and posted (slides as PDF or slides with audio using Flash) on the website below.  Five lectures were given by UVa faculty members and the remainder were given by invited speakers from the NIH and other universities.  Please let us know if you find any of these helpful.
