Information on what to do at home following a TIPS procedure (Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt)

    TIPS DISCHARGE INSTRUCTIONS

    • Rest and take it easy for the next 24 hours.
    • DO NOT DRIVE OR OPERATE HEAVY MACHINERY FOR 24 HOURS OR WHILE TAKING NARCOTICS.
    • Do not lift anything over 5 pounds for the next 24 hours.
    • No strenuous excise or lifting for at least 7 days.
    • Resume previous home diet.
    • Observe any fluid restrictions given you by your liver doctor.
    • Do not drink alcohol while taking pain medications or Tylenol.
    • Keep a band-aid over the puncture site(s) for the next 48 hours.
    • No tub baths or swimming for 7 days (no immersion in water for 7 days).

     

    Contact your liver doctor IF YOU DEVELOP:

    • Confusion, slurred speech, difficulty walking or extreme tiredness
    • Do not have 3-4 soft stools a day
    • Develop new bleeding
    • Worsening chest discomfort or pain
    • Shortness of breath (cannot catch your breath)
    • Urine becomes tea colored
    • Stools are clay colored
    • Swelling in stomach or legs
    • Fever of 100ºF for greater than 48 hours or greater than 101ºF.

     

    Contact interventional Radiology immediately (at 434-924-9401, after 5 PM 434-924-9400) if you develop:

    • Bleeding at the puncture site.
    • If a urinary catheter was used during your hospital stay or you notice burning upon urination, pain or fever call your doctor.

     

    If you have any questions or problems, please call the Angio/Interventional Radiology Department and speak with one of the nurse practitioners or doctors.

    Other times and on weekends holidays; 434-924-9400 and ask for the Angio/Interventional Radiology Fellow on Call.
