Discharge instructions following treatment for dypuytrens

    These instructions will help you take care of yourself at home.



    Start with clear liquids after you reach home. Wait about 45 minutes and if you do not feel sick, try bland foods first and then progress to your usual diet.



    • Keep your hand elevated above your heart when at rest.
    • If directed, use the sling when active.
    • Remember to move your elbow and shoulder at least four times a day to prevent stiffness.


    Special Care Needed

    • Do not remove your splint or dressing.
    • The splint/ will protect your injury. 
    • Do not get it wet.
    • No weight bearing with the effected arm/hand.
    • Do take your pain medication as directed.



    Watch for any sign of infection after surgery:

    • Fever or chills greater than 101° F.
    • A significant increase in pain not relieved by your medication.  Remember that you are expected to have pain.
    • An increase in swelling.
    • Increased redness or streaking into the hand or up the arm.


    When to call your Surgeon

    Contact us at 434-982-HAND during regular business hours or Call 434-924-0000 and ask for “Resident on call” for
    Dr. _______________________ if: 


    • If your dressing becomes wet.
    • No urine output eight (8) hours after surgery
    • No bowel movement in three (3)days
    • There are signs of infection as above
    • Chest pain or shortness of breath
    • Vomiting lasting more than four (4) hours
    • Large amount of bleeding (more than one teaspoon)

    Call 911 if you have chest pain or shortness of breath
