policy 0191 : Refusal of Treatment

Under Virginia law , capable adult patients and emancipated minors have the right to make informed decisions concerning their medical treatment, including decisions to consent to or refuse some or all proposed treatments. Refusal of proposed treatment refers both to withholding treatment not yet begun and cessation of an ongoing treatment. Decisions concerning refusal of treatment are not only applicable at the end-of-life, but can occur at any time during a patient’s treatment.
