policy 0102 : Discharges Against Medical Advice

The Medical Center respects the right of capable adult patients, authorized surrogate decision makers of adults incapable of making an informed decision or parents or legal guardians of minor patients to make informed decisions regarding the patient’s health care. The Licensed Independent Practitioner (LIP) caring for the patient should make an effort to act in the best interest of the patient when (a) an adult patient who is capable of decision making insists on leaving the Medical Center Against Medical Advice (AMA), or (b) the surrogate decision maker of an adult patient incapable of decision making or parent(s) or legal guardian(s) of a minor patient insists on taking the patient from the Medical Center AMA.
