policy 0269 : Provision and Documentation of Patient and Family Education

Patient and family education is an integral part of care and influences the patient’s outcomes. Effective education promotes patient engagement, patient safety, and can improve health outcomes. A systematic approach to patient and family education provides patients, families, and/or caregivers with appropriate information based on identified needs. Patients, their family members, and/or other caregivers shall be provided education on how to communicate concerns about patient safety issues that occur before, during, and after care; and given specific instruction on topics relevant to the patient’s condition and identified needs.
