policy 0192 : Medical Treatment of Inmates

The University of Virginia Medical Center is committed to serving the health care needs of all its patients, including persons in the custody of State and Federal Departments of Corrections, regional and local jails and detention facilities (henceforth referred to collectively as “corrections facilities” and their personnel as “corrections officers”). When providing health care to persons in the custody of corrections facilities and escorted by corrections officers (henceforth referred to in this policy as “inmates”), the Medical Center shall provide for the safety of other patients, visitors, and staff. University of Virginia Security and University Police are responsible for coordinating all non-clinical aspects of the inmate’s visit. Corrections officers are responsible for maintaining security and control of the inmate, and at least one corrections officer will be present with the inmate at all times.
