policy 0321 : Management of Patients Who Leave their Assigned Patient Care Areas

The University of Virginia Medical Center is committed to providing an environment that fosters safe and quality health care for its patients while preserving their personal dignity and autonomy. While patients are expected to remain within their Assigned Patient Care Areas so that they may be appropriately observed and treated, the Medical Center recognizes that patients may benefit from leaving Assigned Areas for a brief period. The health care team shall discuss such expectations as well as the risks and complications that may arise from leaving Assigned Areas with patients or the legally authorized representative of a patient. The Medical Center has established standards for patients leaving Assigned Areas.
