policy 0142 : Advance Directives

All practitioners providing healthcare to inpatients and ambulatory patients at the Medical Center shall inform adult patients seeking health care services of their right to complete an Advance Directive; and shall ask patients or patients’ family or other caregivers if the patient is incapacitated if they have an existing written Advance Directive. All practitioners providing health care to adult patients at the Medical Center shall be guided by the wishes of the patient expressed in a valid Advance Directive in compliance with Virginia law. Information about this right is included in documents presented to the patient and in signage posted in care areas.
