HeRO Score
What is HeRO?
It is continuous cardiac monitoring that uses Heart Rate Characteristics (HRC) analysis to estimate the risk of sepsis in the next 24 hours; the number generated is called the HeRO score.
HeRO Score
- Most of the time, scores are lower than 1
- An abrupt increase to a value over 2 over a short period of time may indicate early sepsis
Nursing Responsibility
- Record the HeRO score in Epic when complete vital signs are recorded
- Notify the HO of the following:
- Whenever a score increases by 1.0 over the previous 24 hour period, OR
- Whenever the nurse is concerned about the score.
- After notification, ask the HO “when would you like to be notified again?”
- Indicate with a “N/A” in EPIC if infant does not have leads.
- Be sure that the HeRO score displays the correct patient.
- Use the touch pad next to the HeRO monitor to click on the bed spot (“Patient View”) & make sure the patient is correct.
Troubleshooting (when baby’s HeRO score is not displayed)
- Check HeRO cable (gray cable) is plugged into the wall and monitor brick (patient should have green dot next to their name on hero monitor, if properly plugged in)
- Check the patient’s EKG leads to make sure they are secure & picking up correctly.
- Be aware that VLBW infants who do not have EKG leads will not have a HeRO score.
- Be aware that ECMO patients do not have a HeRO score.
