    Facts:

    • 1% of all cardiac defects
    • Pulmonary veins drain into the right atrium either directly or indirectly via a systemic venous channel
    • PFO or ASD necessary for survival

    Types:

    • Supracardiac: pulmonary veins attach above the diaphragm, often to the superior vena cava.
    • Cardiac: pulmonary veins attac directly to the coronary sinus and drain into the right atrium
    • Intracardiac: pulmonary veins attach below the diaphragm into the portal venous system, draining into the inferior vena cava (most severe form).
