Facts:
- 1% of all cardiac defects
- Pulmonary veins drain into the right atrium either directly or indirectly via a systemic venous channel
- PFO or ASD necessary for survival
Types:
- Supracardiac: pulmonary veins attach above the diaphragm, often to the superior vena cava.
- Cardiac: pulmonary veins attac directly to the coronary sinus and drain into the right atrium
- Intracardiac: pulmonary veins attach below the diaphragm into the portal venous system, draining into the inferior vena cava (most severe form).
