    Care of Neonatal ECMO Patients:

    • Cannulation requires highly skilled personnel including ECMO specialist, OR staff/surgeon, Neonatologist and colleagues, RN/RT.
      • Baseline labs/physiologic data prior to cannulation
      • Provide blood products as needed, neonatal protocol to be sent prior.
      • Circuit priming meds/fluids
      • Ventilation maintenance

     

    Important principles:

    • Gentle ET suction
    • Heparin (bleeding) precautions:  avoid rectal probes, injections, venipunctures, heel sticks, NG tubes/oral only, nasal suctioning. 
    • Priority for infection control measures
    • Physical care/turning, ROM. 
    • Pain management
