guideline 2.170 : Palliative Sedation Guidelines (3 East)

One goal of the Palliative Care Service is to manage symptoms and provide comfort and quality of life to patients as we provide end of life care. This document provides guidelines for the administration of parenteral or subcutaneous sedation to comfort patients on the 8 West Palliative Care Service who meet all of the following criteria: Have an established DNR order; Are terminally ill; Are experiencing ongoing symptoms, seizures and/or restlessness despite aggressive treatment; Treatment options have been discussed with members of the interdisciplinary team (including a palliative care physician) and with the patient and/or family.
