guideline 2.128b : HeartMate III Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD), Clinical Management

The HeartMate III (HM III) left ventricular assist device (LVAD) is an investigational device that may be utilized as long-term support in a patient unresponsive to maximum conventional medical treatment. Ventricular assist devices (VADs) are used to decrease the workload of the left ventricle while maintaining systemic pressure and cardiac output. The HM III LVAD provides left-sided circulatory support and maintains flow, even in the setting of complete left ventricular failure. The purpose of this guideline is to describe the clinical management for this population improving the overall physiological status among these patients at UVA. [Carole Ballew]
