guideline 2.001 : Alcohol Withdrawal Screening, Assessment and Treatment Guidelines

All adult care service centers admit and manage patients with co-existing alcohol dependence. Alcohol withdrawal may occur inadvertently or be the primary focus of attention. Approaches to withdrawal screening and management may vary; a consistent, evidence-based approach to detoxification is likely to improve quality of care and patient outcomes and provide tools for medical and nursing staff that will streamline practice and prevent many unwanted sequelae. The substance abuse literature has produced proven tools for the screening of alcohol withdrawal that are supported by the medical literature. [contact Gabrielle Marzani]
